Top Ten GPS
Looking to go on a few road trips this summer? Even if you won’t be traveling far from your home town you’ll do well to get yourself a good quality GPS to make the ride as smooth as possible. Here are some of the top models to consider.
TomTom GPS XXL IQ Routes: Unlike many other GPS devices the TomTom GPS XXL IQ Routes is as effective for crowded inner-city navigation as it is for rural and long-distance travel. Aesthetically the screen is very large and clear, and the suction is small and powerful, though the sensor occasionally suffers slowdown when booting.
TomTom Start 2: One of the better entry level products within the TomTom line specifically and the GPS world in general. Like many other lower-level and simplified GPS systems the Start 2 revolves around stripped-down yet still accurate navigational functionality. Benefits from an extremely space-efficient design and easy installation.
Garmin Nuvi 1310T: A relatively inexpensive Garmin model that none-the-less doesn’t sacrifice accurate navigational prowess. Very simple to use while featuring a very attractive model and clear information presented on the screen. An additional FM receiver for the device, however, is necessary for some users and is a relatively expensive addition.
Garmin Nuvi 1340: Not intended to be a revolutionary or particularly challenging device, the Garmin Nuvi 1340 performs simple GPS functionality very well, though it offers fewer options than many other models. Provides hands free modes via Bluetooth compatibility, strong satellite connections and attractive glare-free full-sized screen.
Garmin Nuvi 1390T: Thinner, lighter weight and overall easier to attach and utilize within your vehicle the 1390T adds great functionality to their improved aesthetics. Most notably the 1390T provides customizable data fields including such often neglected information as location elevation and automatic zooming and framing.
Garmin Nuvi 1490T: While it’s missing an FM transmitter and some of the additional functionality of other Garmin models, the 1490T is still a good buy. One of the largest benefits of the 1490T is its great ability to break your journey into different programmable segments.
Garmin Nuvi 255W: Provides easy to use satellite navigation that’s appropriate and simple to figure out for less technologically sophisticated drivers looking for an easy entry into the GPS market. Comes fully stocked with updated and accurate maps. Provides voice prompted turn by turn directions and is compatible with MSN Direct (optional).
Garmin Nuvi 3760T : Good functionality for price, though it’s missing some voice command functionality and some of the fancier graphic representations of your route. Provides capacitive touch with double the resolution of older Garmin models. Overall one of the best GPS devices out there, and likely ideal if you don’t mind slightly reduced functionality compared to high end models.
Garmin Nuvi 3790T: Some users report minor difficulty with the mounting device on this GPS, but overall the 3790T offers a highly responsive and clear navigational image. A higher end model providing fancier display functionality, such as 3D mapping. Like other models the 3790T also does not come with an FM transmitter.
Snooper Syrius: Uses the unique Enigma database which provides a high level database of automotive speed safety camera information, updated daily to provide accurate information to drivers. Manufacturer is extremely devoted to high level customer service. A world-class GPS device from a lesser known brand.
Any of the above GPS devices is going to be a great, intelligent buy for getting around this summer. Overall if you had to choose you won’t go wrong going with a Garmin device, and of the Garmin line the most popular among other consumers is the Garmin Nuvi 1490T, followed by the Garmin Nuvi 1390T. Both of these provide a high level of functionality at an extremely reasonable price.
