Company/Developers – Electronic Arts / Dice Homepage Genre – First Person Shooter Multiplayer Demo Expected Release Date – September 2002
Introduction
Battlefield 1942 has been fancied to steal Medal Of Honor’s crown in the multiplayer department, which is a hard act to follow I can assure you, but how is the game shaping up? The new multiplayer demo may cast some light on the subject, and show what we might have in store for the September release.
Where do I download the demo?
For a list of download sites go to the Homepage. However you have to be a member of all the ones listed bar one.
The Australian EA website has instant download access. In fact I finished downloading from the Australian site miles before I was even off the Gamespy waiting queue! It is roughly a 130 MB file, so I urge you to get it Broadband/Cable users and have a go!
Compatibility
As long as your drivers are up to date I doubt you’ll have problems. Before I downloaded the latest NVIDIA drivers I had crashes to desktop very often, but now I don’t. Proves that the tech advice they give isn’t just a load of porkies and fobbing off excuses.
First Impressions
First impressions after download and install actually weren’t too hot. The menu system and control setup isn’t that user friendly. Keys that are bound together have a warning message, but the GUI does not inform you where the problem lays.
After configuring your controls to your preferred settings (come on, who uses the W, S, A, and D keys to move?) its time to hit the servers! However, finding a server to play proved difficult to say the least (see Outlook).
Finally I found a server with 4 players. Upon loading (after the first abortive attempt where I tried to load a game and it LOCKED - How nice…) the map was so huge that I didn’t see a single opponent.
However, I found a more busy server and then the fun quickly began. My initial troubles forgotten I started to enjoy myself greatly. Battlefield 1942 will be a fun game to play judging by this, but how good the whole game is overall we will have to see.
