Introduction
Hyped as one of the best strategy games the PC has to offer, taking over two years to produce, and the successor to the classic Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, Warcraft III takes us back to the land of Azeroth and all the swords and sorcery shenanigans that entails.
Orcs, Elves, Dwarves, Humans and Undead all run amok trying to bash the snot out of each other, and of course it’s up to you (that’s right you. You bought the game, you watched the opening cut scene it’s your responsibility) to sort it all out. Violently. So pick up your battle-axe, sword, bow or putrid lump of rotted flesh and follow me…
Compatibility
I recently upgraded my poor, beleaguered, over clocked-until-it-could-take-no-more ATI 128 Rage Pro to a nice, happy, spangly, new, GeForce4 Ti 4200. Although Warcraft III ran on my old configuration and it was still nice and playable, it was still rather slow, retaining decent framerate only on a resolution of 800x600.
Having pondered upgrading my system for a while I decided it was time to splash out (albeit moderately) on a nice new graphic card; specifically the Gainward GeForce 4 Ti4200 64MB (I’m assured by Ben that it “overclocks like a cheap whore.” Nice.)
Warcraft III resolutions at my new specs
After replacing my old card, (now in retirement, occupying a cosy static proof bag) I witnessed a dramatic increase in speed and quality. Warcraft runs smoothly on my current setup, even when rampaging Undead hordes fill the screen demolishing everything in sight (Me) or when powerful wizards lay waste to enemy troops with a few well placed spells (everyone else). All graphical options were available, and I experienced little slowdown, with the exception of transition from loading screens to battlefield and back.
