Introduction
I’ve read three reviews of B1942 already (damn, they were quicker than me to get them out!), and each one has said the same thing… “You cannot compare Battlefield 1942 to Medal of Honor”. Why the hell not?!?
To be quite honest I think that statement is stupid. The two games ARE very much alike. For starters they are made by the same company (Electronic Arts), they both look similar in appearance and visuals, they both cover the same conflict, they both use the same array of weapons, and they both draw on the aspect of Multiplayer team combat. Hell, some of the levels are essentially the same!
If you think comparing B1942 with MOH is wrong, then equally the age old conflicts of Sonic the Hedgehog vs. Mario, and Quake 3 vs. Unreal Tournament are invalid, which they were clearly not!
These games are similar, there is no denying it. Yes the focus of game play is different slightly, with B1942 being strictly a Multiplayer experience whereas MOH is both Single player and Multiplayer, but comparisons will, and need to be made. If you take the Multiplayer aspect out of each game to assess then we, the gaming community, need to know which title comes up top.
MOH took Return to Castle Wolfenstiens crown away earlier this year. Does B1942 relieve MOH of its command?
Compatibility
Resolutions
Don’t be fooled by the recommended requirements, they probably will (just) not be good enough (Unless you have the settings all turned down, but then that defeats the point of owning this lovely looking game). I’ve spoken to many online players during my battles, all complaining about the high specs necessary. “I have a 2.0Ghz P4 and a Geforce 3 and my game runs terribly!”, “I am running this at 640 x 480 and its still runs like a dog”, to quote a few. Like I personally care about these moaning ninnies, but it was good research none the less.
My system however seems fine, to add salt into these peoples wounds. Initially, when I first loaded the game slowdown was apparent. After a bit of tweaking with the settings things run amicably, and most of all I didn’t drop below 1024x768! I get the infrequent slowdown here and there I admit, but then you get those with any game at certain key moments.
Oh, and you’ll see I included Internet connection speeds this time round. Believe EA/Dice when they recommend Broadband or similar, as even this can be a nightmare (see later). 56K modems will simply NOT do in this game.
Change of review style
This time around I decided to ditch my usual pattern of reviewing, and go for the whole "Which is better" approach instead. Where does B1942 gain ground over MOH, and where does it lose it?
