Comparisons and Conclusion
Comparisons
Age of Empires 2 – The title which sets the standard for this type of game. It boasts more units than SC, and covers different epochs meaning different technologies and research. Pretty well balanced game but is really showing its age now.
Empire Earth – If you read my review on Empire Earth then you’ll see that both games are given the same score, so it may say sound strange me saying that Stronghold Crusader is actually better. The thing is that SC is much more sturdy and enjoyable than EE is, despite EE having more modern graphics and visuals. If I reviewed EE today then I would knock it down one notch.
European Wars - Cossacks – I personally didn’t enjoy this game, but there are lots who do. Graphics and interface to me were terrible.
Star Wars: Galactic battlegrounds – This game is, so far, the lowest scoring game reviewed on OCPrices by myself. Read why here.

Conclusion
Good
- Graphics exceptionally detailed, even despite not being 3D
- Huge battles can (and often do) occur, and thanks to low system requirements they run smoothly
- Battles are well handled
- Good challenge to RTS veterans
- Feels different to all the other AOE clones out there
- Fun and unique siege concepts
- Plenty of different ways to play
- Heavily focussed on castle building
- Comes with scenario editor
Bad
- Deeply unforgiving to newbies. Steep learning curve
- Graphics aren’t state of the art 3D
- Game sounds can get on your nerves
- No research aspect of game
- Although boasting 25 units it doesn’t feel like enough
- The A.I. isn’t that great, but especially worse in the skirmish games
- Scenario editor is rather clumsy, and takes time to use
- Can become old pretty quickly
Summing up
For those who loved Age of Empires, especially those who meticulously plan your castle/base, and have been patiently waiting for a game to succeed it, then you might well have it! Stronghold Crusader certainly is an enjoyable game, with quite a lot to keep you entertained for those who crave castle building and siege warfare.
The only problem is that the rest of the game it is a bit limiting due to the fact it heavily concentrates in those other areas. The A.I. on the skirmish maps is poor, thereby reducing fun and thus reducing the time you’ll ultimately spend with the title. Plus the added fact that the visuals aren’t as attractive compared to other recent RTS’s that are cropping up (like Age of Mythology) means that many will turn away before they even start.
SC is a worthy addition to the RTS genre, it just hasn’t redefined it enough! Firefly Studios, please give us a sequel!
