X - Beyond the Frontier was a game which seems to have spawned a whole community of dedicated fans, yet somehow went largely unnoticed by many in the gaming world. Despite generally good reviews on websites and magazines, for some reason the game never really did take off. In fact by the appearance of Egosoft’s forums the majority of fans seem to be of European descent, which could in turn explain it’s almost ‘cult’ status for us viewing it from the UK and US. Imagine my surprise then when I walk into my local games store to see X2, the sequel to Beyond the Frontier, sitting right in front of me, almost out of the blue. Has this game finally got what it takes to appeal to the masses?
Compatibility
Hopefully in the next few days I will have my new P4 2.8Ghz processor, therefore making slowdown (for the time being) a thing of the past. Currently though my specs aren’t high enough to enjoy X2 – The Threat on the PC gamers standard (or should that be minimum?) of 1028x768 resolution with full Bump Mapping. Playing at 800x600 works fine, with minimum slowdown during really big hectic battles, if you can bear going below 1028x768. Playing at higher resolutions for me adds noticeable slowdown, and I certainly won’t tolerate constant slowdown. People with higher systems than me have nothing to fear, those who are close to mine or below should take note.
