Introduction
This has got to have been one of the longest drum rolls in the world of PC videogaming...
Doom 3, it's been lingering in the world of speculation, rumour, counter rumour and leaked alpha's for what to many Doom fans and FPS addicts must seem like an age. It's finally here though (hence the review, obviously), but is it too late?
The carefully leaked screen shots certainly looked impressive enough but there are real contenders to be worried about these days. Id software have been god's when it comes to straightforward arcade style action FPS games, however the gaming community are looking for something a little bit special these day. Doom 3 has been anticipated as the greatest FPS ever made, but does it live up to the hype?

Compatibility

There have been lots of different reports of how Doom3 will run on various specs. Some horror
stories have been cooked up by those naughty boys and girls who downloaded the Alpha versions with their monster specs the game barely reaches 5fps!
Well I can tell you that with my current PC specs set to the high quality setting and at 1280x1024 resolution managed to squeeze out a reasonable 60fps in places and averaged about 46fps when the action got really hot. At 1024x786 I kept it going at little over 60fps which for my own gaming experience was quite enough.
My old specs even managed about 50fps at 1024x786, again at high quality settings. However with the old RAM there were problems with the game pausing for about 1/4sec when you enter a new room or look around quickly. So I suggest getting some decent RAM and tweaking the doom3.cfg file to get a video RAM performance boost (note: there are many different tweaks available by Google search find the one that best suits your setup).
When you start Doom3 it will probably set the graphics at a much lower setting by default than
your system is actually capable of. I would definitely recommend setting the game to higher
settings, even if you have an older spec. All in all I think Id have done a bang up job of getting
this engine to perform outstandingly on most systems - a sensible idea if you are to sell as many
copies as possible!
