Comparisons and Conclusion
Comparisons
C&C: Generals [PC] – Great game, and probably the best of the traditional RTS games. I personally didn’t like the single player campaign and I think GC2’s campaigns are more enjoyable.
Ground Control [PC] – The original. Still a good game and worth playing if you can find this on budget somewhere. However because the sequel isn’t related to the first you can just pick-up-and-play this new one instead.
Perimeter [PC] – I haven’t played this yet, but if you’re a fan of non-traditional RTS games you might want to look at this. It supposedly is one of the most innovative RTS games out there at the moment.

Conclusion
Good
- Great graphics for a RTS
- Lack of building bases and gathering resources means game is more focussed heavily on combat
- Good variety of missions
- Interesting story to go with those missions
- Secondary abilities of all units are useful
- NSA and Virons are very varied in look, design and capabilities
- Includes a good skirmish mode, and full MP capability
- Fairly amusing sometimes
- Better than the original!
Bad
- People who like building bases in RTS may not like this
- Can be very difficult at times
- No controllable aerodynes
- Switching to secondary fire mode cancels current move order
- Skirmish mode A.I. isn’t very good
- Getting a useful camera angle can be tricky at times
- Captain Jacob Angelus (the main character) annoys me
Summing Up
From the perspective of someone who has never played the original there really isn’t that much not to like about Ground Control 2 once you get the idea of not being able to build bases out of your mind. For die-hard fans of the original there may be some changes you won’t like, but I think you’ll overcome them quickly when you play and realise that this is a brilliant RTS. A fabulous and worthy sequel for a classic game.
