Introduction
In my many years of gaming, I have come across many types of games for many different systems. In fact, it is safe to say that I have played on just about every major console that has been made from the 80’s and beyond. Therefore I can safely say that violence in videogames is a very common occurrence. It seems that characters like Sub Zero, Duke Nukem, Dante, and even Super Mario are prone to some violence in one way or another. Whether it is the sword slashing of Link, the run and gun action of Master Chief, or the summoning prowess of Yuna, violence has made itself so much of a mainstay in gaming that it is safe to assume that it will be along for the ride well into the future of gaming.

With all that being said, I can also tell you that it hasn’t all been a smooth ride for violent games, with most developers making at least one title with over the top violence as its main (and only) selling point. It shows how little some developers think of the consumer, believing that we will play just about anything as long as it has copious amount of blood, guts, and senseless violence present. There are very few games that can take such a simple concept and turn it into a good game, and there are even fewer that can turn it into a great game. The Grand Theft Auto series is one of the many attempts at doing so that have actually came out right.
Grand Theft Auto has been praised for its go anywhere, do anything non-linear approach, its large environments, and the ability to do anything and have little to no consequences for it. The Fifth installment of the series, San Andreas, takes a departure from the Mafia style action of the previous installments and focuses more on the street gang lifestyle. This departure has garnered some complaints, but it shouldn’t as GTA: San Andreas has proven itself to be the best out of the series and another must have game for the PS2!
