Introduction

Back in the early days of Socket A (think Thunderbird 1.0ghz and the KT133 chipset) the best kind of air cooling you could get was an aluminum heatsink with a 60mm fan. Since then, CPU heatsinks have continually increased in size and differentiate in shape as the need for more cooling performance grew. Today we’re going to take a look at a very old school type of heatsink (with a bit of modern super dense copper fin technology thrown in), the OCZ Gladiator 2.

Specs are as follows:

• Application: Socket A Athlon/Duron up to XP 3100+
• Construction: Copper base and fins with aluminum shroud
• Dimensions: 63 x 62 x 62mm (with fan)
• Weight: 439.4 gms (w/fan + finger guard)
• Fan: Delta EH 60 x 60 x 25mm
• Fan Speed: 7000 RPM
• Air Flow: 37.6 CFM
• Sound Level: 46.5 dB\A

The first thing you’ll notice are the convection fins. The fifty thin copper fins draw attention to themselves even more with the contrasting aluminum shroud covering two sides. This shroud directs air flow out the sides of the Gladiator II to maximize convection. The clip runs down the middle of the sink separating the fins into two pairs of fifty. The fins themselves have a slight curve which is said to increase the velocity of the air moving across their surface (Bernoulli's Principal).
