Packaging/Components

Packaging:

The heatsink is shipped by itself in a brown cardboard box, no fan. HCC provides the Y.S. Tech fan separately in a plastic baggie. In my case, both items were well insulated in a larger box with foam packing peanuts, and came unharmed. This is saying quite a bit, as I reside up here in Canada, a border and a world apart.

Wrapped in a thick plastic bag and fitted securely into the cardboard box, you can see that the SLK-700 heatsink is properly taken care of by Thermalright. While proper care of the HS seems mandatory anyways, some other companies (Thermaltake in particular) seem to think otherwise, choosing to stuff everything into an empty (but flashy) box and leave the rest up to luck.

Components:

Included in the package is everything you need to get started, minus the fan. A set of clips, foam strips, padded “feet”, the heatsink itself, and even a syringe of thermal compound. Thermalright were considerate enough to install a base protecting piece of plastic The adhesive-backed pieces of foam fulfill different functions, depending on their shape. The white cicular ones are to be placed on either the base of the HSF or the CPU itself, as the SLK-700’s base is too narrow for the standard Althon/Duron pads to support. The strips go on the top of the heatsink, between it and the fan. This elevates the fan, further eliminating the center deadspot, as well as stopping the fan from wiggling about, and reduces noise from vibration as well. Curiously missing however, are instructions. The Thermalright SLK-700 does require a bit of assembly, and instructions would have helped.

Thermalright have taken care of the SLK-700's beatifully polished base with a sheet of protective plastic, to ensure that no scratches or dirt befoul your precious heatsink before installation.

The set of clips provided hold down your choice of a 74mm T.M.D fan, 60mm x 38mm fan, or low profile 60mm x 10mm fan depending on which holes you install the clips in. The bottom holes are for the low profile 60mm, the middle for 74mm and by process of elimination, you can probably guess that the top set is for 38mm tall 60mm fans. Those of you wishing for a silent PC may want to use a low profile 60mm fan instead of the supplied 74mm T.M.D, which does create a fair bit of noise. Delta 60mm’s won’t have much of an advantage though, as they are both noisier and not as effective. The T.M.D fan is within 3cfm of the Delta, and it removes the dead center, which probably makes up for the loss of air, and then some.
