The Memory Sticks

Corsair XMS4000

Written on the hologram, which is never picked up too well by digital cameras is:

CMX512--4000 XMS4000v1.1
0330218
XMS4000 512MB 500MHz 3448

Most of the information is self explanatory, with the 3448 meaning CAS 3, 4,4 being tRCD and tRP respectively, and the 8 being tRAS. You will immediately notice that these are very relaxed timings indeed, especially since we have become used to CAS 2-5-2-2 from the likes of Corsair's own LL series PC3200. Clearly, this rules out XMS4000 for people wanting to run low clock speed at low latencies - you are much better off buying some 3200 Twin X for this.

Removing the heat spreaders (sorry Corsair, but people moan if I don't) reveals a name I haven't seen in performance memory for a couple of years, Hynix. The Part number is HY5DU56822BT-D43, with the 43 meaning DDR400 at CAS 3, meaning Hynix only rate these for PC3200 speeds, but so long as it does what it says on the tin, who am I to argue?

The PCB is a Samsung part, and is fully JEDEC compliant with the all important top row of bypass capacitors in place. These improve stability and reduce the chances of memory failure. Certain performance brands, cough, GEiL, cough; seem to forget about these to save a couple of dollars a stick.
