Introduction

It was only a few years ago that even the most basic wireless access point could set you back $350, and actual transfer rates were only a few megabits. Fortunately wifi technology has advanced greatly, and quite a few manufacturers not typically associated with networking have jumped into the WAP game. Today we have a look at the latest 802.11g router from X-micro. Does it have the goods to take on Linksys and Netgear?

Like the Microsoft WAP I reviewed awhile back, the X-micro router serves as both a wireless router, and a 4-port Ethernet switch.

The unit itself is fairly understated in its design, with the exception of a curved “hood scoop” that graces the top. The power and operation lights run across the front.

On the back are the Ethernet ports, reset switch, and input for the power cable. The antenna bend angle is adjustable and it freely rotates. It is also completely removable, which is nice if you want to use a stronger antenna, but I didn’t have any signal issues.

Like most routers, it is controlled through an html interface, rather than a software interface like Microsoft. Installation is pretty straight forward. You login to the router using the 192.168.1.1 IP address, then, setup your desired administrator password. After that, you tell the router whether or not you want to use DHCP, what IP ranges you want to use, the broadcast identifier name and channel, the router then resets, and you are ready to go.

Next: Software and conclusion >>
