The X-micro router has a very attractive and easy to use interface, certainly worlds ahead of the ugly, dated interface that Linksys has been using for years. Wireless security options are extensive, and include the new WPA system.
A wealth of access restriction options are offered as well; the X-micro clearly has Microsoft’s router beaten here. Like on the Microsoft router, MAC and IP filtering are offered, but the X-micro goes a step further by including URL, domain, and protocol blocking as well.
So does that 108mbit\s “turbo mode” actually work? Surprisingly yes, it does. While you won’t see 100mbit, I was able to get a sustained data transfer speed of around 9 megabytes per second, which is 72mbit\s, making this the fastest 802.11g router I’ve ever come across. Well done X-micro!
Considering that X-micro has only been making routers for a very short time, Linksys and Netgear should be fearing this company, and trying to figure out how the X-micro router is so fast. D-Link…well, I’m not even sure how D-Link is still in business. If you are setting up a network and have dismissed wireless as too slow; you should take a good look at the X-micro WLAN 11g router before committing to CAT 5. The X-micro has great range, superb security features, a reasonable price tag (roughly $60), and is the quickest 802.11g router that I know of. What’s not to like? Highly recommended.
