Asetek Hard Drive & Antarctica Socket T Waterblock Review

Category : Extreme Cooling
Manufacturer : Asetek

Introduction

Recently, Asetek updated their product line with Socket T (LGA775) adapters for their Waterchill series. They have also introduced two hard drive waterblocks. Today, we will be investigating their 3 ½' bay hard drive and Socket T Antarctica waterblocks. If you have not read our previous coverage of Asetek's Waterchill kits, I suggest you read this review first for background knowledge.

First Look

Asetek offers two hard drive blocks to suit your system – a 3 ½' bay version and a 5 ½' bay counterpart. Both are said to reduce hard drive temperatures between 34 and 42%, with the 5 ½' bay block just edging out in Asetek's tests. You may ask why do we exactly need water cooling for hard drives. Personally, I believe that this type of cooling for hard drives is only necessary for mission-critical systems with very low case airflow. However, we will further look into this in the later parts of this article.

The Socket T waterblock basically comprises of the same Antarctica copper base, but just with a different acrylic lid. Unlike the universal waterblock, this lid only supports Socket T. Although it is essentially the same waterblock we reviewed here, it will be interesting to see its compatibility (clearance…etc) with the new LGA775 motherboards. Questions like “How well does it perform with a 3.6Ghz Prescott” also come to the fore.
