Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 2GB Review

Crucial Technology have recently had some very successful products in their Ballistix line of memory modules – the Ballistix PC-4000 2GB Dual Channel kit for instance offers a great combination of low latency capability and extremely high top end speed – however we haven’t yet looked at any of the DDR2 offerings from this giant among memory manufacturers. With Intel’s newest dual core Pentium D chips (Presler) offering fair performance at stock speeds, and incredible overclockability, we thought it was just the right time to take a look at some high speed Crucial Ballistix DDR2 modules!

Crucial sent us over the BL2KIT12864AA804 dual channel kit which is available from their website here. This dual channel kit comprises two matched 1GB modules of PC2-6400 memory, rated at the aggressive timings of 4-4-4-12 at 2.2v, and a top speed of 800MHz DDR2! Coupled with those extremely low timings (the majority of high speed DDR2 is rated at CAS 5) we should see some incredible performance from these sticks.

As is always the case with Crucial Technology products, our RAM arrived in two separate anti-static bags, within a plain cardboard box containing a Ballistix user’s guide. The modules themselves are fairly stylish, with orangey yellow heat spreaders mounted on a black PCB. Note that these are not the ‘Tracer’ parts with the activity LEDs mounted on the top of the DIMM; these are currently unavailable at the PC2-6400 speed.
